Capitalism as we know it in the United States and across the world has not worked. The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic American billionaries have grew their income by 931 billion USD. (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2020/12/01/american-billionaires-that-got-richer-during-covid/43205617/). While 57.4 million Americans filed for unemployment during the peak of the pandemic in March. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jackkelly/2020/08/20/jobless-claims-574-million-americans-have-sought-unemployment-benefits-since-mid-marchover-1-million-people-filed-last-week/?sh=61814d8d6d59)

It is clear that capitalism only benefits the rich and punishes the poor. People are not paid by how much they are worth. People are paid according to how business owners and CEOs can maximize profits. Workers are not treated like humans but rather as commodities as a means to increase profits for the ultra rich. This is absolutely inhumane as CEOs do not work as hard as minimum wage workers and definitely do not deserve to make tens of hundreds times more than their employees.

Capitalism does not provide equal opporunity for all. In fact the chances of someone born in the bottom 20% of the American wealth distribution has only a 7% chance of making it to the top 20%. Whereas someone already born into the top 20% has a 40% chance of remaining in the top 20%. (https://www.pewtrusts.org/~/media/legacy/uploadedfiles/pcs_assets/2012/pursuingamericandreampdf.pdf). This is clearly not equal opportunity as many defenders of capitalism say it is. Rather your quality of life simply depends on how lucky you are to be born into a wealthy family.

In conclusion, capitalism does not treat workers as humans and only benefits the ultra rich businessmen and CEOs. Furthermore socialism is a great alternative that pays workers based on their talents and efforts.

Capitalism does work.
In fact the USA has the highest GDP of any country and brought about numerous innovations through capitalism.

GDP is the Gross Domestic Product. It measures the dollar value of the amount of goods and services that a country produces. However GDP does not measure the wealth distribution within a given country. Instead it measures the overall output. Therefore GDP is not a good measure to indicate that capitalism works because it does not take into account the immense income inequality that exists within America.  As mentioned previously millions of poor and middle class Americans lost their jobs due to the pandemic while the ultra wealthy were profiting and making billions of dollars.

Capitalism by definition means the ownership of goods and services by private owners and corporations. This means that CEOs and business owners have direct power over their workers and pay them minimum wage in order to maximize their own profits. CEOs of major companies do not deserve to make thousands of times more than their employees. They do not work harder than their minimum wage workers so thus they should not make billions of dollars by exploiting middle class workers. For example why should Jeff Bezos be deserving of the billions of dollars that he receives when he has not made a single Amazon product himself. This is not at all justifiable as workers should have power rather than wealthy elites.

A much better economic system that could replace capitalism is socialism. Socialism calls for the ownership of goods and services by the people/workers. In socialism workers are treated as human beings and are paid according to how much they work and how well of a job they do. Furthermore socialism allows for unionization of workers and collective bargaining to give workers power to make demands for higher pay and extra employment benefits. In short socialism gives power to the common man while capitalism gives power to the wealthy.
