In honor of National Parks in the US celebrating their 100th birthday a couple of days ago...

What are national parks or other conservation lands like in your area? Feel free to share some pictures if you can find some :)

Also, are national parks a good idea? Should they be government run? If you had a large amount of land available somewhere, would you donate it to be used as a national park or similar?

National park definition- an area of scenic beauty, historical importance, or the like, owned and maintained by a national government for the use of the people.
From: http://www.dictionary.com/browse/national-park
National parks are owned and maintained by the State. The state is really a group of people, in control of an established territory. I don't have an issue with owning land, even if some non-governmental entity wanted to claim a piece of land of scenic beauty and allow people to visit, I have no issue with that. I do have issues with the State in general though.
If you had a large amount of land available somewhere, would you donate it to be used as a national park or similar?
No.

Coming to you from the most beautiful state in the United States.

35,000 islands, 10,000 + lakes, and several hundred waterfalls.

No. All land should be used to maintain mankind, but also shown the utmost respect.

Should they be government run?

Governments sell protected land to the highest bidder. Wyoming and Alaska for example.

If you had a large amount of land available somewhere, would you donate it to be used as a national park or similar?

No.

Awesome idea, protecting precious bits of land for future generations.

Should they be government run?
Yip

If you had a large amount of land available somewhere, would you donate it to be used as a national park or similar?
Assuming it was pretty and stuff, absolutely.

What are national parks or other conservation lands like in your area?
Always nice to show off a bit :)

To make it a fair comparison with the size of most US states, I've only included parks I can reach comfortably within 150-200km, and excluded most of the minor ones or parks I haven't been to (or at least traveled through). Given preference to those most accessible of course.

Kapiti Island

Tararua Ranges

Marlborough Sounds

Abel Tasman

Nelson Lakes

Kahurangi

Rimutaka

Aorangi

Ruahine

Whanganui

Taranaki

Tongariro
Oldest in the world and two-time world heritage area

And why not, here's one of mine:
