History of Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir was an independent kingdom not a part of the Britsh Raj. During the 1947 partition of India, they were given the option to.....

^ Map showing modern day division of Kashmir, between China, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan

(A) Join Pakistan

(B) Join India

(C) Become Independent

The Raj, Hari Singh, was skeptical of both option (A) and option(B). He knew that his Hindu administration wanted to go with option (A), but the vast Muslim majority would revolt if the kingdom went the course of option(B). Raj Singh, inspired by the independence of the Swiss nation, knew that the only way to keep his kindgom from collapsing was to make it an independent entity, therefore, he went with option (C).

The Raj, formulated an agreement that went to both India and Pakistan. Asking for political independence from both influencing groups. Pakistan, accepted the agreement, officially recognizing the nation of Jammu and Kashmir. India, was less accepting, denying the independence of the new state. [1] [2]

^ Hari Singh, Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir

Shortly after the Partition diaspora, the British instigated a tribal revolt, in an attempt to resolve the conflict. The natives, quickly disposed of J/K administration, and acceded to Pakistan. The south, also was led into a revolt (suspiciously), and quickly took down Jammu governors. Hari, fearing his nation would descend into complete dissolution, called for both nations to send troops. Pakistan's British high command, refused to send troops. He appealed to India. Their stance was clear though. They would not send troops unless J/K accedes. Hari agreed, and signed the instrument of Ascension. [3] [4]

In order to make my case, I have to provide vital reasoning on why Jammu and Kashmir, is in better hands with Pakistan. Here are a few statistics......

(A) 97% of the Kashmir valley practices Islam

(B) 67% of the state is Muslim

(C) Only 29% of the state is Hindu

(D) 74% of the whole Kashmir region is Islam

(E) 24% of the population is Hindu

Jammu and Kashmir

Statistics calculated from the2001 Census India District Profiles

There are roughly 1.5 million refugees from Indian Administered Kashmir in Pakistan Administered Kashmir and other parts of Pakistan.[58] An estimated 50–100,000 Kashmiri Muslims[59][60] and 150–300,000 Kashmiri Pandits have been internally displaced due to militancy.[57][61]

^ Demographics of Jammu and Kashmir

You might be asking, what do these demographics symbolize? Obviously, that Kashmir has an extreme Muslim majority. As point(A)shows, the region is 67% Islam. Now I did not directly cite terrorism, but here are a few things we learned from the 1,500,000 refugees living in Pakistan. [5]

(P1) Indian Marshall Law results in the deaths and displacement of citizens

(P2) Jammu and Kashmir is a haven for religious terrorism and jihad

(C1)Therefore, Indian presence in the region is causing net-harm

This resolution will stand, unless my opponent defeats, that this contention is not synonymous. My opponent may try to argue a ploy, that both nations are secular, but he's sorely mistaken. Its no secret that Muslims in Pakistan get more rights, freedoms, and governance designed around their beliefs. Its vice versa for India. I am not implying that either nation restricts rights from religious minorities, but have governments and laws designed to protect their respective religions. [6]

Another contention, would be the fact that neither side has moral high ground here. Both sides has not done their fair share of abuse. They equally tore up the empire on instigation of Britain. They continue to infiltrate each other. And they recklessly shoot nukes at each other, which I must say, is absolutely horrific. No joke, both sides have strategically used nukes on small targets. Audience, please note, any attempt at proving a moral high ground victory should be looked at with serious contempt. [7]

Why not Independence?

As figured, I have set this debate up like Kashmir should be independent. This would not be a wise decision. Kashmir is jammed between three nuclear powers, all of which have used extremely aggressive force at one time or another to take the region. This is essential knowledge, because it leads us to believe an independent Kashmir would be a living war zone, with it being more than likely  nuclear test ground. Therefore, the only real peace for Kashmir is in the hands of nuclear deterrence. I do not wish it like this, but this is a harsh reality. [8]

Thanks for the debate progressives, good luck!
